Grotta delle farfalle
The Reserve
Riserva Naturale Grotta delle Farfalle is between the territory of San Vito Chietino and Rocca San Giovanni. It is located on the top of a rocky hill at a height of 155 m. The Reserve doesn’t overlook the sea but it is delimited by the most populated area that runs along the SS 16. The name derives from the presence of many natural caves that, during the second world war, have been refuges for many partisans and evacuees in neighboring countries. Riserva Naturale Grotta delle Farfalle has many ditches and short streams.
The thick vegetation is an excellent habitat for many animal species that are able to move along ecological corridors at low altitude thus avoiding the cultivated areas.
