It is the municipality that is the leader of the Costa dei Trabocchi. It has very ancient origins, dating back to the Frentani people, which founded Histonium in the 12th century BC. Histonium was an important seafaring village and a port of the Adriatic sea. It was destroyed by the Longobards and it was rebuilt in a Medieval style as we see it now. In the historic center there is the Caldoresco Castle, the cathedral and the Palazzo d’Avalos that houses museums on the local culture.
The city centre stands on a promontory at 144 meters above sea level and for this reason you can enjoy a panoramic viewpoint on the 20 km of coastline, of which 7 km are made up of sandy shores and 13 Km are made up of a cliff, which includes the Golfo of Vasto, that is the unique coastal inlet of the Adriatic Sea, between the Golfo di Manfredonia to the south and the Golfo di Ancona to the North.
